What is a Leap Year?

A leap year is a year that has one extra day added to the calendar, making it 366 days long instead of the usual 365 days. This additional day is added to the month of February, which has 29 days instead of the usual 28. Leap years occur every four years to help keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

Why do Leap Years Exist?

Leap years exist because a year (the time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the sun) is about 365.2422 days long, not exactly 365 days. To account for the extra 0.2422 days each year, we add an extra day every four years. Without leap years, the calendar would slowly drift out of sync with the seasons.

How to Check if a Given Year is a Leap Year

To determine if a year is a leap year, you can follow this simple rule:

  • If the year is divisible by 4, it is a leap year, unless:

    • It is divisible by 100 (then it is not a leap year), unless:

    • It is divisible by 400 (then it is a leap year).

For example:

  • 2020: Divisible by 4, not by 100 → Leap Year.

  • 1900: Divisible by 100, not by 400 → Not a Leap Year.

  • 2000: Divisible by 400 → Leap Year.

Effects of Leap Years on Birthdays

People born on February 29th experience the unique challenge of only having a birthday every four years. In non-leap years, they usually celebrate their birthday on February 28th or March 1st. This has led to fun traditions, with some choosing to celebrate on the “official” day, and others opting for the closest date.

How Leap Years Affect Interest and Loan Calculations

Leap years can slightly affect financial calculations like interest on loans or savings. Since interest is typically calculated on a daily basis, a year with an extra day (366 days instead of 365) can cause a slight increase in interest payments or earnings. When calculating annual percentage rates (APR) or daily interest rates, the leap year can slightly alter the final amount.
